Manchester is a township in Ocean County NJ. As of the 2018 census, it has a population of 43,416. It was incorporated as a township in 1865 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. Manchester was given its name by William Torrey and it is named for Manchester, England. Manchester is mainly known for containing the Lakehurst Naval Air Station, site of the Hindenburg air ship disaster in 1937. Manchester is bordered by the Ocean County municipalities of Berkeley Township, Jackson Township, Lacey Township, Plumsted Township and Toms River Township.
